POET AND STORYTELLER PERFORMS IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

WHO/
WHAT
:

Peter Cook, an internationally known American Sign Language poet and master storyteller, will perform at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

WHEN:

Thursday, Jan. 11
12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

WHERE:

Chicago Illini Union
828 S. Wolcott Ave., Room 213

DETAILS:

Cook has been featured often on television, including the PBS production of "United States of Poetry." His beat-inspired work is performed in American Sign Language, a three-dimensional language that allows him to create a clear image with movement. His original stories and poetry showcase his versatility by incorporating pantomime, acting and movement in an innovative style rarely seen in performances of this kind.

Cook's performances are dynamic, humorous, and at times, poignant. Hearing audiences will barely need the spoken English translations, but Cook will perform with an interpreter.

The performance is cosponsored by the Medical Humanities Program, UIC College of Medicine, and the UIC Institute on Disability and Human Development.

The program, part of the H. Davis Ethics Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.
