UIC CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The theme for this year's Black History Month celebration is "Echoes of the New Millennium," honoring the legacy of Dr. Carter Woodson, founder of the study of African-American life and history.

The following events are open to the public and free, unless otherwise noted. Group arrangements are available upon request. For more information, call Campus Programs at 312-413-5070. Feb. 1:

Coffee House Series Film Screening of "Midnight Ramble," the story behind the scenes of America's great jazz musicians, 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Recovery Room, Chicago Illini Union, 828 S. Wolcott Ave.

Black History Month Opening Event: The Kenwood Academy Concert Choir, featuring the hymns, lyrics, symphonies and sounds of African-Americans, 5:30 p.m., Illinois Room A & B, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St.

Gallery Opening of comic book animator Don McQuay exhibit, 4 - 7 p.m., A. Montgomery Ward Gallery, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. Using the images of today, the exhibit reflects the past and foreshadows the future.

Coffee House Series Film Screening, "The Wood," 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Recovery Room, Chicago Illini Union, 828 S. Wolcott Ave. A coming-of-age saga, seen through the eyes of three friends as they reminisce about growing up in Inglewood, California in the '80s.

Feb. 4:

Black Student Union African Heritage Ball, in celebration of black accomplishments in the 20th century, 8 p.m., Illinois Room, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. Admission: $15 per person, $25 per couple.

Lecture "Finding the Rhythm: Jazz and the African-American Visual Artist," 2 p.m., Institute for the Humanities, Stevenson Hall, 701 S. Morgan St. Art historian Dr. Floyd Coleman of Howard University will discuss the synergy between and the influence of jazz on the creations of visual artists in the 20th century and its implications for the 21st century.

Feb. 5:

UIC and the DuSable Museum of African American History host a symposium celebrating the rich heritage of African-American design in Chicago (advertising artists, cartoonists, illustrators, graphic designers and product designers) at the DuSable Museum of African American History, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., 740 E. 56th Place. Registration: $15. Lunch: $10.

Feb. 8:

Lecture by Professor Elijah Anderson, University of Pennsylvania, on the ways that blacks have made history repeat itself with positive results, 4:30 p.m., Illinois Room B, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St.

Feb. 9:

Coffee House Series Film Screening, "The Wild, Wild West," 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Recovery Room, Chicago Illini Union, 828 S. Wolcott Ave. At the end of the 19th century, one man (Will Smith) sets out to capture those responsible for the death of his parents and other innocent families at the end of the Civil War.

Feb. 10:

The Cultural Messengers perform a musical journey throughout the African diaspora, designed to make history come alive for children of all ages. "Brotha A to Sistah Z," 11 a.m., Illinois Room, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St.

Hoopla 2000: "Have You Got Game?" The African American Academic Network hosts UIC students, faculty and staff for a basketball game, 5 p.m., gymnasium, Physical Education Building, 901 W. Roosevelt Rd.

Feb. 16:

African-American Festival, "A Taste of Afrika," 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., A. Montgomery Ward Lounge, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. The Black Student Union hosts a festival featuring African cuisine and jewelry-making, with a perforamce by the Muntu Dance Theatre.

Hot Rod, the contemporary urban rhythm and blues band founded by Rodney Brown and Kevin Bibbs, entertains audiences with the sounds of soul and the rhythms of the '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s, 12:15 p.m., Deli Lounge Cafe, Student Residence Hall, 818 S. Wolcott Ave.

Coffee House Series Film Screening, "Life," 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Recovery Room, Chicago Illini Union, 828 S. Wolcott Ave. In the 1920s, two men from Harlem (Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence), who are late and short in their repayment of loans from an unscrupulous lender, unknowingly risk their lives to make a seemingly simple trip south.

Feb. 17:

Lecture and spiritual singing by Dr. Gloria Jackson Bacon, former member of U of I Board of Trustees, 4:30 p.m., room 605, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St.

Feb. 18:

Black Student Union Hip Hop Music Panel Discussion, 7 p.m., Montgomery Ward Lounge, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. Members of Chicago's hip hop artists community (Gitu Brown, 103, Shurhad, Crucial Conflict) along with representatives from the academic community (UIC, DePaul University, University of Chicago, Northwestern University) and special guests discuss the origins and definition of hip hop, issues within the hip hop community and it's future. Reception will follow.

"The Willie Lynch Letter," a dramatic performance and discussion by Cultural Messengers, 4:30 p.m., room 605, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. The performance tells the story of a 1712 plantation owner from the West Indies who traveled to West Virginia to educate his fellow slave owners in the art of enslavement. A discussion follows the performance.

Feb. 22:

Lecture by Mary Mitchell, Chicago Sun-Times columnist, entitled "A Dynamic Voice For Social Change" 4:30 p.m., Cardinal Room, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. Mitchell will speak about media images in newsprint, television and radio, and their effect on the social and political consciousness of Americans.

Gospel concert by True Praise Chorale, 7 p.m., Illinois Room, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. Admission: $2 UIC students, $5 general public. Fiction Reading by Jeffrey Allen, a graduate of UIC's Creative Writing Program. He will read from his first novel, Rails Under My Back, noon, room 713, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St.

Feb. 26:

Fine Arts Series and Chicago Neighborhood Tours will sponsor a tour of Bronzeville, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., leaving from the A. Montgomery Ward Gallery, Chicago Circle Center, 750 S. Halsted St. The tour includes the DuSable Museum of African-American History, Little Black Pearl Workshop's Art Programs, and the Elliott Donnelley Youth Center of Gardens and Sculptures. Admission: $10. The tour includes breakfast and transportation. Lunch at B.J. Market and Bakery Soul Food Restaurant for an additional $10.

14th annual spring conference, "Career Opportunities in Public Health for Minorities," offering information about the School of Public Health combined degree programs and paid summer internship, 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Chicago Rooms B & C, Chicago Illini Union, 828 S.
