The UIC College
of Pharmacy is poised to begin a new phase of drug discovery with
the creation of a $1.2 million biosafety level 3 laboratory. The lab
will help develop new, effective, low-cost therapies for people afflicted
with tuberculosis-the world's leading bacterial killer.
The new UIC lab
is funded in part from the proceeds of a TB vaccine that was developed
and patented by UIC researchers in the 1940s.
The laboratory
will go into operation June 4, after which time it will be accessible
only to trained personnel in full bioprotective gear.
