UIC POLICE FACE CHICAGO POLICE IN BENEFIT BALLGAME FOR SLAIN OFFICERS

WHO:

The University of Illinois at Chicago Police Department will host its annual benefit softball game against the 12th District Chicago Police Department.

Former White Sox and Yankees slugger Moose Skowron will coach first base for the UIC Police squad. Other Chicago sports legends are expected.

WHEN:

Aug. 25
5 p.m.
(rain date Saturday, Sept. 15)

WHERE:

UIC South Campus Fields
14th Street and Morgan Street

DETAILS:

This annual event benefits the families of slain police officers or memorials established in their names. This year's proceeds will be donated to scholarship funds in memory of Sgt. Alane Stoffregen, who died last year during a training exercise with the Chicago Police Marine Unit, and the 12th District's own Officer Brian Strouse, who was killed in the line of duty in June, and who had himself participated as a player in previous years' benefit softball games.

"We had hoped we would never be raising money for one of our own officers," said Commander Dave Peters of the UIC Police. Much of the UIC campus lies within the 12th District, and the UIC Police - a separate police department with statewide jurisdiction - works closely with the 12th District officers in serving the Near West Side.

A $5 donation is requested to attend the softball game. There will be a raffle drawing for prizes, and food and beverages will be available.
